Tutor Job Description

Position Summary: Tutors work as student representatives of the Center for Student Success to promote students’ academic success and course understanding.  Tutors assist students with courses they have successfully completed and are able to help students understand course material and learn study strategies.  Tutors may serve as an Individual Tutor, Lab Tutor, Peer Coach, or a combination of these. Peer Coaches are also Individual or Lab Tutors. 

Qualifications:

Tutors MUST have each of the following to be offered a position:

  • 3.0 cumulative GPA and an earned A (usually from NGU) in each course you tutor. At a minimum, a B may be accepted upon instructor recommendation.
  • Traditional undergraduate student status with at least 12 credit hours earned from NGU.
  • Faculty recommendation from someone who you have taken a class from, preferably from the instructor who taught the course you wish to tutor
  • Commitment to work as a tutor and attend required training and meetings for the entire semester, barring unforeseen circumstances
  • Appropriate communication skills and the ability to work with students at a variety of skill levels/backgrounds
  • Demonstration of a high level of commitment to being responsive to student needs
  • Responsibility, integrity, punctuality, reliability, and organization

Responsibilities:

Tutors may hold one or more of the following roles: Individual Tutor, Lab Tutor, or Peer Coach.

  • Lab tutors meet with students who have set an appointment or walked into a campus tutoring lab. Writing and Language Lab tutors work by appointment and are paid for the duration of the appointment, while Math Lab tutors work set shifts in the lab (work hours may vary at the manager’s discretion).
  • Individual tutors meet one-on-one with students during an appointment scheduled by the student at a time that works for both the tutor and the tutee. The tutor is paid for the duration of the appointment.
  • Peer academic coaches undergo additional training to hold coaching sessions with students desiring extra, and more general, support on their academic journey. Coaches are expected to also be (or have recent NGU experience as) an individual and/or lab tutor.

Tutors may also take on additional roles after being hired, including:

  • Tutor Ambassadors help promote tutoring in classroom settings or share about their NGU/tutoring experience at a new student event.
  • Tutors may be asked to lead academic success workshops or group study sessions.

General Responsibilities:

  • Arrive and leave work shifts on time.
  • Attend required trainings and meetings.
  • Assist students with the appointment making and/or check-in process.
  • Meet with students who have made an appointment through Schedulicity or who have walked into a lab.
  • Adjust tutoring approach to fit the needs and levels of each student. This includes maintaining a working knowledge of learning styles and tutoring skills.
  • Consider requests from the Academic Support Coordinator to lead workshops and group study sessions, offer services to athletic teams, and represent the Center for Student Success’ Tutoring program.
  • Respond in a timely manner to any communication from tutor managers.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of campus resources and refer students as needed to promote their holistic success.
  • Accurately record time worked in Paycom and immediately address any errors or discuss deviations from scheduled work hours to a manager.
  • Communicate any needed days off or changes to work availability as soon as possible to a manager.
  • Encourage student evaluation of the tutoring experience.
  • Complete a Tutor Semester Agreement before beginning work each semester to provide updated information and affirm understanding of tutoring responsibilities.

Additional Responsibilities for Peer Coaches:

  • Offer individual coaching sessions in addition to tutoring courses of their choice.
  • Participate in additional trainings and/or meetings for coaching development.
  • Maintain knowledge of coaching skills and resources for time management, procrastination, academic success strategies, etc.
  • Complete session notes after each coaching session.

Supervision:

All tutors report to the Academic Support Coordinator and are encouraged to bring questions, comments, and concerns to the person in this role. However, lab tutors may also work with a faculty lab manager and should contact their lab manager for course material-related concerns. Math Lab tutors will also report to their lab manager for scheduling and Paycom concerns.

Work Schedule:

Work schedules will be set through a joint effort between the tutor and their manager.  Tutors may not work during their own enrolled course times but may tutor 7 days a week any time between 8 am and 10 pm based on availability and tutoring lab hours.

Compensation:

Along with gaining experience to add to their resume, tutors receive the following compensation for their work:

$7.25 per hour

Tutoring is open 7 days a week from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm and all sessions must be held in designated areas on campus. The Writing and Language Lab is open during business hours, and the Math Lab is open M-Th evenings, while individual or peer coaching sessions may be held during any open tutoring hours.
